SMOKING MOUNTAIN




In the world there are so many volcanos. Many towns were reduced to ashes. However only one volcano is kwown all over the world.

Popocatepetl, or just El Popo for short is not only tongue-twister but it is an active volcano and the second highest hill in Mexico. It measures 5 426 metres and its cone is covered by permanent ice. When the weather is good you can see it from the capital Mexico City from which it is at 70 kilometres distance. Not far away the volcano are several cloisters from 16th century that belonge to the world culture heritage.

“Smoking Mountain” is translation from indigenous language called Nahuatl. Also it is said that Popocatepetl smokes almost regularly. Since 1994 the volcano has been active. The volcano releases different gases, sand, ash and sometimes burning stones, too.

In April, 1996 became explosion. This explosion killed five people - climbers. In spite of that was forbidden they wanted to see crater from near. 30 June, 1994 became huge explosion again. The volcano buried the centre of city with ash and stopped runnig of planes.

One legend says that Popocatepetl was fighter who allegedly died in a battle. This incorrect information got to his lover Ixtaccihuatl whose that broke heart and she died. When Popocatepetl arrived and found his love dead he looked after her body until he has died.
