The London Eye
The London Eye is the world’s largest observation wheel. Architects David Marks and Julia Barfield came up with the idea as an entry for a millennium celebration competition organised in London. They were very happy when they were told that their project had been chosen from all the many entries but, remembering it had to be fully working and ready by 1st January 2000, they quickly started to organise the difficult job of transforming their design drawings into a real, working model.
It is 200 hundred times bigger than a normal bicycle wheel and there are probably more than 2000 different opinions about the London Eye.
Standing next to the river Thames, like a majestic eagle, it is close to Westminster Bridge and Big Ben. The London Eye is 135 meters high, that is nearly three times as high as Tower Bridge. It has 32 passenger capsules, and these have room for 24 people in each one. On a fine day visitors can see over 25 miles in any direction, including Windsor Castle.
A unique design success story for the start of a new century, the London Eye carries up to 15,000 visitors a day.
