Woman in India

Gender discrimination continues to be enormous problem in Indian society. India represents large part of the world´s women population. This country is undergoing rapid economic , political and cultural change. The situation for working women is improving fast, somewhere slowly. They are beggining to follow women of the Western world.

In spite of it there are some unique problems in India for women. In our country we do not know the dowry system. It calls for a large sum of money to be paid to the groom at the time of marriage. Later their husband desire for male progeny but women can not influence it. Some rules of the sharing of inheritance are very unequal, too. For example in most Hindu families, only the sons inherit the wealth of the parents. Married girls are disadvantaged, considered no longer part of family. I do not like arranged marriages, too. For India it is distinctive. Many men and women have very little knowledge about their future partner.

Of course, women of India are striving to be independent similar like men but they are faced with a lot of problems. These complications are usually caste system, the heavy religous customs, older and more tradicional roles of the sexes. The role of women is slowly succeding in its development. There are some independent groups of women and national and worldwide organizations which based on the goal of gaining equality. Not everywhere but some parts of Indian society have been changed. Women are more accredited as profassionals, as bread-earners in families and independent thinking individuals.

I keep my fingers groosed for them! :)
