Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty, completed in 1884, was a gift from France to celebrate the independence of the USA.
The French historian Edouard Laboulaye and sculptor Frederic Bartholdi designed the statue and Gustave Eiffel designed the interior.
The only condition of the gift was that America provide the statue’ base. The Statue of Liberty National Monument is one of the country’s most visited monuments. A trip can mean a several-hour wait in line. The monument has other attractions, including a museum and exhibit in the pedestal. The promenade, colonnade and top levels of the pedestal offers spectacular view of New York Harbour.
Sculptor Bartholdi first created Liberty as a 2.25 meter clay model. Then he enlarged it in plaster several times. The skin is strong enough to withstand, yet is able to expand and contract with ghanges in temperature.
