Portobello Road
Have you seen the film NOTTING HILL with Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts? The part of London you can see in the film is Portobello Road.
Portobello Road is famous for its market. It is claimed to be the longest street market in Britain. It changes character according to which day you come. From Monday to Thursday it sells fruit, vegetables and clothing, on Friday you can find there second – hand junk and general bric-a-brac and Saturday is the day of the famous antiques market.
Portobello Road antiques market is one of the world’s largest markets with over 1,500 dealers selling every kind of antique and collectable. Its history goes back to the 19th century, having started as a gypsy horse market in 1870s.
Today, the market is a magnet for tourists, visitors, collectors and bargain-hunter’s. Therefore, many shops, including some up-market antique shops and art galleries, have deliberately moved here. They sell furniture, pictures, toys or silver for prices starting from a few pounds to several thousands.
The market starts at about 5.30 am with trading between dealers from the UK and overseas. Most stall holders arrive by 8.00 am and the market is in full swing for the rest of the day. It is a bohemian area and a great place for a snack with exotic flavour.
